Summary of the Book
The widow of the Maharajah of Mastipur is a spoilt, selfish woman. She spends her time playing with her dogs, finding new lovers and discarding them, and drinking almost constantly. Her sons seek to get their hands on their inheritance, hoping she dies early, but she fends them away with ease. The seasons change, the years move on and the hill station constantly morphs but the Maharani doesn’t change, she remains as indomitable and unmoving as ever. Her old friend Ruskin manages to keep in touch with her despite her shortcomings, for he finds her fascinating and full of charm. This is a story of love, death and the true value of friendship.
